Pre-Surgical Testing
Typically five days before your surgery, one of our scheduling coordinators will arrange an appointment for you at our Pre-surgical Testing Clinic.
During this three hour appointment, a nurse practitioner (NP), registered nurse (RN) and a specialized cardiac anesthesiologist will meet with you to:
- Review your medical and surgical history
- Perform a physical examination
- Conduct routine blood work, perform a chest X-ray and electrocardiogram (EKG), and swab your nose for common bacterial infections, a routine screening to determine if additional antibiotics are needed during your recovery
- Identify any additional diagnostic tests you might need
- Verify current medications and supplements
- Discuss any additional medical issues that should be shared with your anesthesiologist
- Discuss early hospital entry, if necessary, to optimize your health before surgery
- Outline a post-operative care plan, including pain management strategy
- Answer any questions (many patients find it helpful to bring a list with them)
- Sign a surgical consent form, authorizing your desire to proceed with surgery
Note: You may eat before your appointment, there is no need to fast before blood work
